School-Based Initiative For Adolescent Parents And Their Young Children, Phases I And II

CAPD sought support from The Foundation for Child Development, the Stuart Foundations, the California Wellness Foundation, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, and the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation to learn how school districts and other organizations had overcome barriers to expanding the scope and scale of school-based programs for adolescent parents and their children. Based on intensive field investigation, CAPD produced a report documenting strategies being used around the country to surmount these barriers.

In the second phase of this initiative, we are applying the lessons we learned from that investigation in three communities. Funded by the Vira I. Heinz Endowments, the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, and the Foundation for Child Development, CAPD is working with school districts in Minneapolis, Pittsburgh, and Portland, Oregon, on a multi-year effort to strengthen current school-based programs for pregnant and parenting students and their children, and to increase the number of teens and their children served.
